Project Title: Rehabilitation of Arrabo Water Catchment
Location: Arrabo Village, Beled-Hawa District, Gedo Region, Jubaland State, Somalia
Implementation Partner: Teysiir Construction and Water Engineering Company
Client: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
Funding: EU PLACE Fund
Contract Value: USD 87,640.30
Project Focus: Water Security, Climate Resilience & Community Livelihoods
Maximizing Community Well-Being Through Sustainable Water Solutions
1. Problem & Vulnerability Context 🌵
Communities across Somalia’s arid and semi-arid regions continue to face severe water scarcity and climate-related challenges. Recurrent droughts have placed enormous pressure on pastoral communities, resulting in significant livestock losses and threatening household livelihoods, food security, and access to safe water.
The rehabilitation of the Arrabo Water Catchment was designed to strengthen local water security, protect pastoral livelihoods, and improve resilience to future drought conditions.
2. Cost-Effective & Sustainable Technical Solution 🏗️💧
The project combines durable civil works with renewable-energy technology to maximize water availability while minimizing long-term operating costs.
💧 Water Retention & Storage
* Excavation of the catchment to approximately 2.5 metres.
* Installation of a 1.5 mm HDPE geomembrane liner to minimize seepage and maximize water retention.
* Rehabilitation and improvement of the catchment to increase its functionality and water-storage capacity.
☀️ Renewable Energy Water Supply
* Installation of a 3.7 kW hybrid solar pumping system.
* 8 × 550 W solar panels provide renewable energy for water pumping.
* Solar-powered operation reduces dependence on fuel and helps lower recurring operating costs.
🛡️ Water Access, Health & Sanitation
* Construction of a silt-trap and settlement system to improve water quality.
* Dedicated livestock watering facilities for shoats, cattle, and camels.
* Installation of a 5 m³ water storage tank.
* Community tap stand to improve access to water for domestic use and support safer water practices.
3. Triple-Bottom-Line Impact 🌍
📈 Economic Impact
Protects critical pastoral assets by improving access to reliable water, helping communities sustain livestock-based livelihoods and supporting local economic activity.
🌿 Environmental Impact
Improves water conservation and reduces resource loss through HDPE lining while utilizing renewable solar energy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
🤝 Social Impact
Improves access to water for both communities and livestock, reduces pressure around scarce water sources, and contributes to stronger community resilience and reduced potential for resource-related tensions.
Building Water Security. Protecting Livelihoods. Strengthening Communities.
Through the rehabilitation of the Arrabo Water Catchment, Teysiir Construction and Water Engineering Company is contributing to a more resilient and sustainable future for communities in Gedo Region—combining practical engineering, renewable energy, and community-focused infrastructure to deliver lasting impact.
